Recent statistics from a survey commissioned by NZ Marine show boating is now New Zealand’s favourite recreational pastime.
Over 1.9 million of us or 40 per cent unwind by getting out on, or around, the water. Something which is reflected in the numerous new options cropping up to help us make the most of our nautical time out.
Like the new breed of shared boating options which have burst onto the scene in the last couple of years. These companies bring a variety of boating styles to us; from an easy-to-book trailer boat monthly subscription to an intelligent way to enjoy ultra-luxe boat ownership.
They’re lower commitment, often lower investment (and lower in maintenance time) than traditional boat ownership, with options to suit the new-to-boating owner, those without space for a trailer boat at home, or those who don’t get out on the water quite as often as they’d like.
Yacht Collective
The Yacht Collective, introduced by experienced brokerage house, 36 Degrees Brokers, is a premium syndication option offering luxury boating for a fraction of the cost. With access to Beneteau’s vast range of power and sail options, including the popular Gran Turismo and Swift Trawler power models as well as the Oceanis range of yachts, the team at the Yacht Collective offers a full walk-on, walk-off service.
The approach is about offering peace of mind. With professional management, shared owners jump onboard to beds that are made, consumables which are topped up, full tanks and a boat ready to cruise to their favourite anchorage.

Skipperi
Finnish-founded Skipperi brings trailer boat sharing to the Hauraki Gulf with 20 boats available to subscribers in Auckland. The model removes the stress of maintenance, while including all you need for a safe day on the water, like insurance, a modern chart plotter, life jackets and ropes. Bookings are made via your phone, with check in once you arrive carried out the same way through the Skipperi app. Skipperi allows you to report any issues through the app before or after your trip, and gives you the responsibility of captaining the boat safely, returning it clean and refuelled.
It removes the need to find storage or a berth for the fleet of new Haines Hunter SF454 boats, with subscribers simply returning them to their home berth in either Westhaven or Half Moon Bay. Making it a strong option for those new to boating, each subscription also includes a Coastguard Boating Education Day Skipper Course and a two and a half hour practical training session before accessing Skipperi boats.
